Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that 29 Vietnamese citizens who were detained by South Korean authorities are awaiting deportation procedures to return home.
The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of July 7 confirmed the information that 33 Vietnamese were arrested in South Korea, including four Vietnamese who have been naturalized in the host country.
Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang said that these citizens are being detained by the Immigration Department of South Korea and going through procedures to be deported back to the country, but did not give the reason.
Previously, news from KBS World in Vietnamese said that on July 3, the Busan City Immigration Office in coordination with the City Police Department arrested 33 Vietnamese people for allegedly trading and using drugs, violating the local Law on Drugs Management.
According to this station, 33 people, all of whom are illegally staying in Busan city and the South Gyeongsang province area, were caught by the police while holding a drug party at dawn on July 3 at a karaoke room dedicated to Vietnamese people in Masanhoewon District, Changwon City (South Gyeongsang).
Among those arrested, there was a person who entered Korea in 2018 as an international student and then stayed illegally, accused of selling drugs to Vietnamese students in Korea and using drugs.
The responsible agency will strengthen the review after it was reported that many Vietnamese citizens gathered at dawn on weekends to use drugs at karaoke bars and discos exclusively for Vietnamese people in the area.
