Many Vietnamese have contributed hundreds of millions of dong in recent days to help Ukrainian victims who are suffering hardships caused by Russia’s war of aggression.
VOA knows that the fundraising efforts of martial artist-journalist Doan Bao Chau and Mr. Nghiem Sy Cuong, both in Hanoi, have brought in a total of more than VND560 million ($240,000) to help Ukrainians.
On his personal Facebook, Mr. Doan Bao Chau said that on the afternoon of March 8 he gave Nataliya Zhynkina, Ukraine’s interim chargé d’affaires in Vietnam, an amount of VND191 million donated by many Vietnamese through his bank account.
Before that, Mr. Chau gave the deacon a different amount of VND270 million. Thus, the total amount that many Vietnamese people donated through Mr. Chau to help Ukraine is VND461 million.
“Thank you for your response,” Mr. Chau wrote on his personal page, to the contributors. This martial artist, who is also a journalist, is a critical voice and social commentator with more than 142,000 followers via Facebook.
“I believe that in a critical situation when the people of Ukraine are suffering because of the war, your contribution means a lot,” said Mr. Chau.
He added: “I explained to Nataliya Zhynkina that this money shows our affection for the victims of war. We are a people who suffered much of wars, so when we see you suffering because of war, we feel very sorry. We wish you successful defense of your country.”
In parallel with Mr. Doan Bao Chau’s efforts, Hanoi citizen Nghiem Sy Cuong also campaigned for donations for Ukraine a few days ago. He shared with VOA about why he did so:
“Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has challenged the conscience and dignity of all people around the world. I see that in this difficult time, in Vietnam, if I can’t do much, I can still make a small voice, have a little something to support the Ukrainians in the hope of making a small contribution to ease the pain of Ukrainians and put an end to the senseless war soon.”
Mr. Cuong said that besides the call for donation, he will also auction some memorabilia of his house:
“I started at 2:00 p.m. on March 3 and had quite a number of supporters. I also plan to auction off some family memorabilia and also ask for donations. I plan to do it in a week and then send the money to the Ukrainian embassy in Hanoi.”
By the evening of March 8, Mr. Cuong said that the total amount he had raised through two calls was more than VND87.5 million and $100.
A week ago, answering VOA about many Vietnamese speaking out in support of Ukraine, some even willing to go to fight for Ukraine, Chargé d’Affaires Nataliya Zhinkyna expressed that she was “very thrilled.” and emphasized that: “When I see the support of the Vietnamese people, their kind words, their will to fight for Ukraine, I deeply appreciate it and thank you!”
