The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has just approved a new Country Program Document for Vietnam for the period 2022-2026 and a $120 million financial support package for the Southeast Asian nation, Vietnam News Agency reported this on February 6, 2022.
UNDP assessed that, after more than 30 years of uninterrupted economic growth, Vietnam has made remarkable progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations.
Vietnam’s multidimensional poverty rate decreased from 8.23% in 2016 to 4.8% in 2019, with 5.6% of the population at risk of multidimensional poverty.
In 2019, Vietnam was ranked in the group of countries with the highest human development level of 117 out of 189 countries.
However, UNDP assessed that income inequality, gender inequality, and uneven development between regions, urban and rural areas in Vietnam still exist.
Also according to UNDP, Vietnam is currently in the group of 10 countries most at risk of being affected by natural disasters. Excessive dependence on fossil fuels, environmental and ecological degradation are contributing to the loss of opportunities for sustainable economic development in Vietnam.
The new national program targets that Vietnamese people will contribute to and benefit from a sustainable, inclusive economic transformation, a cleaner and safer environment, a just, safe, and inclusive society by 2026.
UNDP also set a goal that all Vietnamese people, especially those at risk of being left behind, will benefit and contribute to a safer and cleaner environment from Vietnam’s mitigation of impacts and adaptation response to climate change, reduce risks of natural disasters, etc.
